Koh Tao, or Turtle Island, got its name from its turtle-shaped outline and was historically a fishing hub, especially for sea turtles. It became popular in the 1980s after divers discovered its vibrant underwater life, making it a renowned diving destination. Today, Koh Tao remains a peaceful island known for its diving courses and beautiful beaches.
Koh Nang Yuan, a small island off Koh Tao, is famous for its sandbar connecting three hills. It was once uninhabited and used by fishermen before attracting travelers in the 1970s. The island is now known for its crystal-clear waters, excellent snorkeling, and a resort, maintaining its charm as a quiet getaway.
During the rainy season, the islands are quieter, making it ideal for those seeking a peaceful retreat. The seas are generally calm, and while rainfall may occur, it tends to be brief. Snorkeling and diving remain popular activities, though visibility may be slightly reduced. The lush landscape is more vibrant, making it a great time for exploring the islands’ quieter beaches and nature trails.
The dry season is the peak time to visit, with clear skies and calm seas, perfect for water activities. Snorkeling and diving are the primary attractions, with excellent visibility around the famous diving spots such as Chumphon Pinnacle and Shark Bay on Koh Tao. The stunning beaches of Koh Nang Yuan, with its iconic sandbar, are ideal for relaxing, swimming, and sunbathing. Island hopping around Koh Tao and Koh Nang Yuan also becomes a popular activity during this time.
While Koh Tao and Koh Nang Yuan are quieter during festivals, visitors can experience traditional Thai celebrations on nearby Koh Samui, such as Songkran (April) and Loy Krathong (November), offering an opportunity to experience local culture and festivities.
