History of Koh Angthong

Koh Angthong, officially known as Mu Ko Ang Thong National Marine Park, is a stunning archipelago in the Gulf of Thailand, located northwest of Koh Samui in Surat Thani Province. The park consists of 42 islands, covering an area of about 102 square kilometers, with both land and marine environments protected under Thai national park regulations.

Early History and Formation

The islands of Ang Thong were formed millions of years ago due to tectonic activity and erosion, creating the dramatic limestone cliffs, caves, and unique rock formations we see today. Fossil evidence suggests that these islands have been shaped by geological changes over time, with some formations dating back to the Permian period (250-300 million years ago).

Seasonal Activities

Dry Season (December – April)

This is the best time to visit Mu Ko Ang Thong, as the weather is clear, the sea is calm, and the water is crystal-clear. Popular activities during this period include island-hopping, snorkeling and diving to explore coral reefs and marine life, kayaking through caves and lagoons, and hiking to the famous viewpoint on Koh Wua Talap for breathtaking panoramic views.

Hot Season (May – September)

Although the weather is hot with occasional rain showers, outdoor activities are still possible. This season is particularly good for scuba diving, as increased plankton attracts larger marine life. For those who want a more immersive nature experience, camping overnight on Koh Wua Talap is an option, as well as joining local fishermen for fishing trips to experience traditional ways of life.

Monsoon Season (October – Mid-December)

This period is not ideal for visiting, as the weather is unpredictable with strong winds and heavy rains. For safety reasons, the park is closed from November to mid-December. While marine activities are unavailable, visitors on Koh Samui can still enjoy scenic views of the stormy sea from afar and use this time to plan trips for the upcoming season.
